Like every technology, the web is subject to evolution, advancement, and growth. From the early days of the internet and web 1.0 which lasted from 1989 to 2005 only allowed users to only read content, referred to as the read-only web. to web 2.0 from 2005 till present allows users to participate in the web, not only as observers but also as creators and contributors.

Web 2.0 was a significant improvement to how data is stored, shared, and accessed on the web, but it came with its drawbacks, especially as regards big tech companies, government, and large institutions in relation to data control, hence facilitating the need for web 3.0.

I like to look at the differences between web2 and web3 from three perspectives. Privacy, decentralization, and economics. My name is Chukwuemeka James Efienemokwu and I’m participating in the Blockgames internship by Nestcoin and the Zuri Team.

Web3, powered by the blockchain gives its users the benefit of privacy, in the sense that anonymity is preserved by the use of a cryptographic concept of public and private keys to encrypt and decrypt data, unlike web2 where data privacy is nonexistent and data could be easily harvested.

Another important distinction between web2 and web3 is decentralization. Web2 makes use of centralized servers to store and process data, in a situation where a central server is attacked, data could be lost. Also, centralized servers are prone to censorship and control by governments or big tech companies.

Economics is another vast difference between web2 and web3 technologies. A major use case of web3 is cryptocurrency and tokenization. Web3 allows for easy transmission of resources from anywhere in the world, unlike in web2 where there is the problem of currency across countries and denominations in largely controlled by government central banks. thank you
